The Landscape of Madhesh

Description

The discourse on Madhesh by addressing the gaps in research and publications. This commitment is reflected in the various initiatives and activities undertaken by the foundation since its establishment in 2007.
The book “Regionalism and National Unity of Nepal (1975)” by Frederick H. Gaige is acknowledged as a pioneering work in the interdisciplinary study of Madhesh. Despite its significance, it initially remained unread by a substantial portion of the population, including Madheshis. However, the landscape started to change after the Madhesh movement of 2007, when Gaige’s book gained widespread readership.
The increased attention on Madhesh in both national and international discussions, post the 2007 movement, prompted various organizations, both civil society and international, to direct their focus towards Madhesh. Although the predominant themes revolved around political issues such as representation, federalism, and citizenship, other critical aspects like the status of Madheshi women and youth, inclusive budgeting, development, and the overall dynamics of Madheshi society were unfortunately left unexplored.
In this context, the Nepal Madhesh Foundation (NEMAF), established in 2007, has emerged as a significant player addressing these critical gaps. The foundation has consistently worked towards the welfare of Madheshis, engaging in research, advocacy, and initiatives that shed light on the multifaceted aspects of Madhesh and contribute to a more informed and inclusive dialogue.
This book, in essence, is a testament to NEMAF’s dedication to bridging the gaps in research and publications related to Madhesh, offering a comprehensive exploration of the issues that have long been overlooked. It is a significant step towards fostering a more nuanced understanding of Madhesh and its diverse socio-political landscape.
